THE LAST MILE OF THE WAY

We are born into a world with seemingly no recollection of where we came from or why we are here on such a planet. With many expectations to fulfill, decisions to make, lives to impact, memories to build, friendships to make, we zoom into this pool called "the living" as if we have any compass to go by. Many are the distractions along the way, the disappointments that we face, the heartbreaks and setbacks that pull us down yet still, we do not give up but persevere seemingly to pursue a goal, an aspiration, a dream or even a destiny.

The mistake we often make as humans is that we are too quick to forget the realities of life. No matter how we present ourselves or who we profess to be, the reality is we are mere mortals, flesh and blood have we all. We are all as clueless to our past (before birth) and are just struggling one way or the other to make our present make sense. As such, we pursue things, desire things all in a bid to get self-satisfaction. No man is better or more important than the other to the extent that we have to keep looking down on one another.

Many things in life that happen to us are supposed to be signs and signposts for us that maybe, we are using the wrong compass to navigate this world. We didn't invent the current compass we are following but as we entered the world, the systems of the world showed us the path to obtain our own compass. The rush for materialism, the desire to please everyone, the passion to pursue the pleasures of this world and the hunger for violence and disorder has precipitated our drive to set our own compasses in line to that of the world.

There is no more respect for life, every man is busy trying to please people, be the richest, strongest, most powerful, most important. Amassing the wealth of this world seems to be the everyday prerogative of man. In a world where we brought nothing, we are trying our best to amass the material things of this world to its fullest. In a world where we watch people die day in and day out, both young and old, yet still we look on carelessly as if for us, death will never beckon on our doors. Is it because we think we are so beautiful or more intelligent or even well placed in society that we think we will never reach that last mile of the way.

Whatever position you hold, whoever you think you are, what material thing you possess and so for that matter you are so proud and pompous, one day we will all reach that last mile of the way. Just like the athlete, before starting the race, it is as if the race will never end, but whether it is a 200 or a 400 or even 5000-metre race, you will definitely get to that last lap of 100 metres. You will definitely get to the finishing line one day because no athlete runs with no hope or vision to get to the finishing line.

The thought-provoking question is this, will you be found wanting at the last mile of the way? The answer is slightly different for the athlete who knows when he is getting to that last lap, unlike we humans, who mostly don't know when we are at the brink of life. Even on death bed when the situation is hopeless, we still have hope we will make it out how much more the man who is rich and healthy and "seemingly" has no need of nothing. We are careless about everything. Until we are at a point where in our own eyes there is no turning back, we continue to plunge into the dictates and appetites of the world. If only we could take our material possessions alone when eternity calls.

Please don't let your pursuit for the things of this world hinder you from being ready for the last mile of the way. Don't let friends or loved ones or even enemies hold you back from being ready at the last mile of the way. Be wise, be faithful and true to your Creator before it is too late.

What will it profit you if you pursue the gains of this world and loose your soul. Your soul matters most than everything else in this world. At the last mile of the way, your body will return back to the dust but your soul will return back to its giver and Creator. Nothing else you have done or achieved here on this earth will matter anymore save what you have done for Christ.

Three questions to answer at the last mile of the way; Did you accept the Lord Jesus as your Lord and personal saviour? After getting to know Him, did you tell others about Him and His saving grace? What did you do with the gifts, talents, potentials God gave you? How prepared are you to answer these questions?

You don't know when you or that person next to you is reaching that last mile of the way. Please, seek your Creator while He may be found, call upon Him while He is  near, let the wicked forsake his ways and the unrighteous his thoughts and let him return and God will abundantly pardon. You are nobody when you die but life transcends what we see in the physical. There is an eternity!!! Make sure you are not found wanting at that last mile of the way friend😢😢😢

The last mile of the way, the songwriter echoes:

If I walk in the pathway of duty
If I work till the close of the day,
I shall see the great king in all his beauty
When I've gone the last mile of the way
When I've gone the last mile of the way
I will rest at the close of day
And I know there are joys that await me
When I've gone the last mile of the way
If for Christ I proclaim the glad story
If I seek for his sheep gone astray,
I am sure He will show me in his glory
When I've gone the last mile of the way
Here the dearest of ties we must sever
Tears of sorrow are seen ev'ry day
But no sickness, no sighing forever
When I've gone the last mile of the way

And if here I have earnestly striven
And have tried all His will to obey
'Twill enhance all the rapture of heaven
When I've gone the last mile of the way
